Soapstone Water Dropper 19th c.
This water dropper is carved from soapstone, with an old man
holding a ribbon attached to a jade bi. The man with elongated earlobes is
seated on a peach. The elongated earlobes and peach are symbols of longevity.
The two round holes are for filling and dropping water. The thumb covers the
larger hole, and this hole is slowly uncovered to release small amounts of
water dropping out from the smaller hole onto the inkstone for the purpose of
grinding ink sticks.
