Contemporary art is the result of challenge and response. The challenge may be political, social, theoretical, or artistic; the artist's response becomes the creation of art. Often this artwork has some basis in tradition, though it is sometimes meant as a rebellion against structure and method. At its best, it is a fresh response to the challenge and provides a subtle means of engaging the viewer in the artist's vision.
