Soapstone Sculpture of Immortal 19th c.
This unusual painted soapstone sculpture is the figure of one of the Eight Immortals, Iron-Crutch Li. Wearing a ring hoop on his head, dressed a long robe, holding a crutch and a gourd in his left hand, this seated figure bears an exaggerated facial expression. Iron-Crutch Li descends to earth in the form of a beggar who uses his power to fight for the oppressed and needy. The carved chest ribs and backbone and the defiant posture of this sculpture vividly portray his bold character.
